Spring Bloom
Bloodroots are in the Poppy family. They are low lying flowers that bloom in the Spring. They open up with the sun and close at night. Their name comes from their root-like rhizome of this plant, which contains a bright red sap. Native Americans used the sap for dye for baskets, clothing, and war paint, as well as for insect repellent. Captured at Lake Bloomington, IL.
